Icon on wood

This painting on wood represents the Madonna with Child. The original panel construction consists of two vertical wooden boards glued together.
The visible painted surface is thought to date back to the 19th or early 20th century.
It seems as though at some point, the painting had been badly damaged and in order to disguise the damage, almost the entire surface was re-painted. Several cleaning tests on different areas of the painting were carried out in order to examine the original paint layer. The surface treatment included consolidation of paint layer, removal of dirt, discoloured varnish and old overpainting. Following, lacunae were filled and retouched.
